Secure messaging apps are good at moving words between two phones. That was never the whole job. The things you work out with other people are documents, numbers, files, decisions — and usually a question neither of you can answer on your own.
The work lives here, not just the wordsAsk for a summary and a real PDF comes back. Ask for the numbers and you get a spreadsheet that opens. It is made in the chat and it stays in the chat.
Files that stay lockedEvery attachment gets its own key, and that key only ever travels sealed inside the message. What we pass along, and what we store, is scrambled bytes.

Why this one lives in the app.

You are reading this on a website that runs a private AI chat perfectly well. So why can this page not do the other thing too? Because Collaborate makes promises to other people, and a web page cannot keep them.
Your keys need somewhere real to liveAn encrypted chat with another person runs on keys that stick around for the life of that chat — that is what makes it possible to know nobody quietly swapped themselves in for your sister. On a phone or a Mac, those sit in storage the operating system guards with your face or your fingerprint. In a browser tab, they would sit somewhere the page itself can reach.
You install an app once. A web page is handed to you fresh every timeThe code in an app was checked, signed, and does not change until you choose to update it. A website is delivered by a server on every single visit — so "we cannot read your messages" would quietly depend on that server sending honest code, every time, forever.
Other people are trusting your device, not just youSafety numbers, alerts when someone’s keys change, the guarantee that an old message cannot be unlocked later — those only mean something if the key material is somewhere it cannot silently be replaced.
So what about the AI chat on this website?Different problem, different answer. When it is just you and the assistant, nobody else is depending on your device, and there are no long-lived keys holding a group together. Your chats are encrypted and stored on your device, and there is no history sitting on our servers to hand over — that is a promise the web can keep, and we built it carefully. Collaborate is a bigger promise, so it needs firmer ground.Collaborate is in the apps not because we ran out of time on a web version — but because the version we could build on the web would not deserve the word.

Nobody needs your phone number.

Most private messengers still open by asking for the one identifier tied to everything else you have ever signed up for. We do not. Pick a username, share a contact code, or scan a square across the table. You can even hold an account that is nothing but a 20-digit number with no email attached at all.

Someone you bring into a shared chat does not need a subscription to read it, open the documents, play the voice messages or check your safety number. They can let you know they have seen it.
